Jan. 25, 2010
Apparently South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s recommendation not to feed strays extends beyond feral cats. At a recent town hall meeting in Greenville, Bauer, who is seeking the GOP nod to run for governor this fall, compared giving assistance to those living in poverty in his state to feeding stray cats.

Jan. 19, 2010
The Washington Post today reported that the crush of those seeking public services has so far exceeded the district’s ability to process applications that some have been forced to spend day after day waiting in line.
It is a far cry from the near mob scene in Detroit last October when thousands of people [...]

Dec. 26, 2009
Considering that the average American gains at least a couple pounds during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, it is hard to imagine anyone in this country is going hungry. Yet more than one in seven, or 14.6 percent, of American households suffered from food insecurity in 2008, according to the [...]

Dec. 24, 2009
Today many of us will spend the day finishing up preparations for Christmas. Gifts will be wrapped, last-minute trips to the store will be made, food will be cooked and family and friends will gather as the festivities begin.
And so many people are truly generous this time of year. It is the busiest [...]

Day 90–Oct. 1 ( Braceville, OH – Hiram, OH, 10.8 miles)
On more than one occasion on this trip I have been told I do not look like someone on a walk for poverty and homeless. Most days, but by no means all, I have started my morning with a hot shower. I have a computer [...]

Day 35–August 7, 2009
The human body cannot live without food. Yet time and time again we give up food in favor of other things our body does not require. And certainly many people have gone hungry in favor of
If this is the case, that so many people would rather go hungry than roofless, is housing [...]

Inconvenient food

Day 29–August 1, 2009
It is an unfortunate fact that healthy food often costs more than food that offers little or no nutritional value. The average price of a gallon of milk is estimated to be $3.50, while a two liter bottle of soda can be purchased for about $1.50 (approximately 3.79 liters per gallon.) A [...]

Day 9–July 12 (McConnellsburg, PA-Breezewood, PA, 18 miles)
I would not have thought it was possible to be worried about water while still walking on the east coast. The day started with three water bottles, plenty to last the day. But it was hot outside, and I drank most of one water bottle before I sat [...]
